Paddy Lamb grew up in the city of Armagh, Northern Ireland, where he attended Armagh Royal School. He studied modern history at Trinity College, Dublin, before moving to western Canada in 1985. Here he completed a graduate degree in physical education at the University of Alberta. His subsequent work as an athlete, coach, sports administrator, historian and archivist, have all influenced his present career.

In 2009 and 2011 he was awarded a fellowship and residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle, Co. Mayo. His work can be found in various public collections, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, and the Strathcona County Permanent Art Collection.

Using landscape as a foundation, and regardless of specific location, my paintings and drawings continue an exploration of several themes. My approach is strongly influenced by history, social culture and memory. It is also affected by my relationship with Ireland and western Canada, offering up differences and similarities in terms of geography and history and adding a personal narrative based on my own circumstances as both an emigrant and an immigrant.
Although my work is not primarily representational it is concerned with human attachment to the land. The subject matter is discovered through my practice of exploring less obvious locations. This leads to a resonance that remains central to the work and strengthens the notion of ‘a sense of place’. Often my interpretation is less interested in original function and more about how, through the distillation of forms, a particular subject becomes more symbolic or monumental in its present form.
